Kanecountyconnects.com has published an open letter from Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District Chief Kelly P. Callaghan regarding the upcoming ballot initiative that could affect fire district coverage for some residents. Dear Editor, With the upcoming November 4, 2014, referendum, the newly formed Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District has been facing significant scrutiny in the media. As they’ve pointed out, “Change tends to bring out strong emotion.†And it's true—change can be difficult, especially when it involves your tax dollars and the services you rely on. Drew Frasz, our Kane County Board representative, recently wrote in a Letter to the Editor, “Many government bodies have struggled with declining revenues over the years, but hostile takeovers of areas that have been well-served by fiscally responsible agencies is not something I support.†We couldn’t agree more. It’s time we look at the facts, not just the rhetoric. The Fox River Fire/Rescue District is pushing for this disconnection primarily to acquire more property to pay off their $4.4 million debt. This isn't about public safety—it's about money. If it were truly about protecting residents, they wouldn’t have repeatedly tried to block the Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District from opening a station in Lily Lake. They wouldn’t have tried to silence the voices of Elburn and Lily Lake residents who are standing up against this change. For over 132 years, the Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District has served and protected these communities. It’s a long-standing commitment that deserves respect. Now, if you vote to disconnect, you're not just changing a fire district—you’re taking on a massive financial burden. You’ll be responsible for paying off Fox River’s $4.4 million debt, plus the cost of new equipment and personnel they’ll need to serve you. Meanwhile, the Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District has no debt, no hidden costs, and no plans for new taxes. Their model is stable, transparent, and built on decades of proven service. Fox River’s approach, on the other hand, doesn’t add up. Let the facts guide your decision. Let your voice be heard. Don’t let financial mismanagement dictate your future. PLEASE VOTE NO on November 4! Kelly P. Callaghan Thanks, Dan
