Kanecountyconnects.com published an open letter from Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District Chief Kelly P. Callaghan regarding the upcoming ballot initiative that could affect fire district coverage for some residents. Dear Editor, With the upcoming November 4, 2014, referendum, the newly formed Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District has been facing a lot of scrutiny in the media. In one of their statements, they mentioned that “Change tends to bring out strong emotion.†That's true — change can be emotional, especially when it affects how your tax dollars are spent. Drew Frasz, our Kane County Board representative, recently wrote in a Letter to the Editor: “Many government bodies have struggled with declining revenues over the years, but hostile takeovers of areas that have been well-served by fiscally responsible agencies is not something I support.†We completely agree with that sentiment. The Fox River Fire/Rescue District is trying to acquire more properties to pay off its $4.4 million debt and continue operating. This issue isn’t about public safety — it’s about money. If it were truly about public safety, as they claim, they wouldn’t have repeatedly tried to block the Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District from opening a station in Lily Lake to better serve the community. They also wouldn’t have worked to silence the voices of Elburn and Lily Lake residents who are standing up against this disconnection and supporting the district that has protected them for over 132 years. Are you ready to take on Fox River’s $4.4 million in debt? If you vote to disconnect from Elburn Fire, that’s exactly what this referendum is about. You’ll be taking on their financial burden. Eventually, your hard-earned tax dollars will be used to pay off that debt, along with the added cost of new equipment and personnel needed to serve your family. While Fox River has been accumulating debt since its creation, the Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District has remained debt-free, with no hidden costs or new taxes. Their financial model just doesn’t add up. Let the facts speak for themselves. Let your voice be heard. PLEASE VOTE NO on November 4! Kelly P. Callaghan Thanks, Dan
