Late Sunday night, residents in Northfield reported smoke in the 300 block of Eaton Street. Firefighters arrived on the scene and found heavy smoke coming from an unknown source across the entire block. As they walked the area, the engine crew moved to the next block and discovered thick smoke pouring from a one-story brick ranch-style home at 344 Wagner Road.

The fire was quickly upgraded to a Code 4 working fire, and Northfield crews sprang into action. Mutual aid units from Winnetka, Northbrook, Glenview, Glencoe, and Wilmette responded promptly. The fire was brought under control relatively fast, but the home’s occupants were not present at the time. Tragically, the family dog did not survive the incident.
