Viking Pump has reimagined its heavy-duty alloy pumps, both steel and stainless steel, with innovative design improvements that enhance efficiency and versatility. These new models are engineered to reduce costs and lead times by simplifying the manufacturing process through a significant reduction in casings and brackets. At the same time, they offer more porting and shaft sealing options, while incorporating numerous new standard features. The new modular pumps are designed to be interchangeable with Viking’s existing steel 123A, 4123A, 223A, and 4223A series, as well as the stainless steel 127A, 4127A, 227A, and 4227A series, and the 724 and 4724 series, which they will largely replace. The model numbering for the new pumps follows a similar format but ends with "C" instead of "A." You can see the full range of Viking Heavy Duty pumps below (Fig. 1), with the new modular pumps highlighted in red. Below is a detailed table outlining the specifications of the new modular pumps: | Material | Jacketing | Series - Seal Type | F | FH | G | H | HL | K | KK | L | LL | LS | Q | QS | N | R | RS | |----------|-----------|----------------------------|---|----|---|---|----|---|----|---|----|----|---|----|---|---|----| | Steel | Non-Jacketed | 123C - Packed | | | | ✔ | ✔ | ✔ | ✔ | ✔ | ✔ | ✔ | ✔ | ✔ | | | | | | | 4123C - Mech. Why did Viking Pump decide to change its highly successful range of alloy pumps? The existing series are workhorses used across the chemical, general industrial, and food processing industries. However, with tens of thousands of possible configurations, it was challenging for distributors to predict and stock exactly what customers needed. This meant that users often had to wait for custom-built pumps or accept trade-offs due to limited availability. To address this issue, Viking Pump introduced a modular design that allows distributors to inventory key components and build up configurations based on customer needs. This approach significantly reduces lead times, lowers prices, and introduces new features. Stainless steel pumps are ideal for: - Corrosive chemicals (e.g., acids and bases). - Processes involving water or steam flushing (e.g., sugar processing). - Low-hazard food processing (e.g., edible oils). - Very low temperature applications down to -120°F / -85°C (e.g., silicone oil in freeze dryers). - Outdoor use in extremely cold climates. Steel pumps are typically used for: - Flammable or hazardous liquids (e.g., fuels, petroleum, and petrochemicals) where thermal cracking of iron could be a concern during fire-fighting water deluge. - High-temperature applications up to 800°F / 430°C (e.g., heat transfer fluids, pitch, polystyrene). Stay tuned for future blogs covering the new ProPort™ casings and U-Plus™ brackets, which are key components of the new modular pump designs.
