Dan McInerney photo Fire crews from Maywood, Melrose Park, Westchester, and Forest Park were on the scene, along with units from several surrounding communities. The fire burned aggressively, forcing firefighters to pull back after the roof began to collapse. Contractors on site warned that there were propane tanks and heavy equipment inside, which added to the complexity of the situation. Aerial streams from Maywood and Melrose Park, combined with ground lines, attacked the east side of the building shortly after crews evacuated. The north section had already collapsed. Dan McInerney photo Maywood dispatched a truck, three engines, and an ambulance. Mutual aid came from Melrose Park, Westchester, and Forest Park, with additional units from Broadview, Berkely, Bellwood, Stone Park, Elmwood Park, Hillside, and River Forest. Master streams were operated by Maywood, Westchester, and Melrose Park, while water supply was provided by Stone Park, River Forest, Bellwood, Berkely, and two Maywood engines. The Maywood Fire Department was called to a four-story vacant building at around 9:00 AM this morning. Contractors on site reported an accident involving a torch near the cockloft of one of the five buildings in the complex. A second alarm was quickly requested, and the fire was eventually escalated to a third alarm. The structure, built with brick and concrete floors, suffered extensive damage as the fire spread through the attic space, collapsing parts of the roof.
