The Maywood Fire Department was called to a four-story vacant building at around 9 AM today, where contractors were working on renovations. Initial reports suggest an accident involving a torch near the cockloft of one of the five buildings in the complex. A second alarm was requested shortly after the first units arrived, and the fire was eventually escalated to a third alarm.
The structure, built with brick and concrete floors, experienced significant damage as the fire spread through the attic space, burning off much of the roof before it collapsed in sections. The fire was contained to the original building, and no injuries were reported.
Multiple images from the scene show firefighters working tirelessly to control the blaze. From a high-rise in Oak Park, Dan McInerney captured the header of the fire, while other photos illustrate the efforts of firefighters using aerial ladders and hand lines to tackle the flames. The Melrose Park Bronto Skylift was deployed as part of the defensive strategy, and multiple engines and trucks from surrounding departments joined the effort.
Larry Shapiro and John Tulipano were on site, capturing the intensity of the fire from various angles. One image shows heavy smoke venting from the roof, while another highlights the use of master streams from both Maywood and Melrose Park. Firefighters also worked from the tip of Truck 502’s aerial to access the cockloft, demonstrating the complexity of the situation.
As the fire spread along the roof and cockloft, crews directed their streams toward the southern end, while the northern part of the roof had already collapsed. Contractors on site alerted firefighters to the presence of several propane tanks and two Bobcat Skid-Steer loaders inside the building, adding to the danger.
Maywood's response included a truck, three engines, and an ambulance, with mutual aid coming from Melrose Park, Westchester, Forest Park, North Riverside, River Grove, and several other departments. Water supply came from Stone Park, River Forest, Bellwood, Berkely, and two from Maywood.
Fire companies worked inside until the fire took control of the roof, forcing them to pull back. Despite the challenges, the fire was eventually brought under control, and the scene was declared clear by noon.
