Toyota Brakes
If your Toyota’s rear brake pads are worn out, it’s important to replace them with genuine Toyota parts to ensure optimal performance and safety. While changing brake pads is a task that most DIYers can handle, it requires some basic tools, patience, and attention to safety. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of removing your old rear brake pads step by step. In our next post, we’ll cover how to install new ones. Before starting, make sure you have everything you need. You’ll need to order the correct brake pads for your specific Toyota model, as well as the following tools:
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Metric socket set or box/crescent wrenches
  • WD-40 or penetrating lubricant
  • DOT 4 brake fluid
Here’s how to remove your rear brake pads:
  1. Park your Toyota on a flat, level surface—ideally in a garage or driveway.
  2. Place wheel chocks in front of the front wheels to prevent the car from rolling.
  3. Use a floor jack to lift the rear of the vehicle and place jack stands under the frame for support. Always refer to your owner’s manual to find the correct lifting points and never work under a car supported only by a jack.
  4. Loosen the lug nuts while the wheels are still on the ground, then remove the rear wheels completely.
  5. Locate the brake master cylinder under the hood, usually near the firewall on the driver’s side.
  6. Remove the caliper mounting bolts using a socket wrench or box/crescent wrench.
  7. Slide the caliper off the rotor and secure it with a wire or hook so it doesn’t hang from the brake hose, which could cause damage.
  8. Take out the old brake pads, shims, and springs. Replace any damaged or worn components with genuine Toyota parts for the best results.
