The Wheeling Fire Department was called around 2:30 AM to a townhouse on Fall Court in the Cedar Run development. A resident reported smoke coming from their building, which contains four units—two of which were unoccupied at the time. Police arrived first and observed flames on the west side of the structure. The incident was quickly escalated to a Code 4 working fire before the fire crews arrived, prompting additional units from Buffalo Grove, Arlington Heights, and Long Grove to respond.
Engine 24 was the first unit on scene and pulled into the dead-end court. Engine 23 then connected to a hydrant to supply water to Engine 24. The fire occurred in a second-floor unit that had been in foreclosure, with a private entrance and stairs on the west side of the building. Firefighters initially knocked down the fire at the doorway but were forced to retreat when the stairway collapsed. They later accessed the second floor using a ground ladder and found that part of the kitchen floor had been damaged, with fire still burning beneath it.
As the situation developed, the alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm due to concerns that the fire might spread along the exterior wall and into the shared attic space. Additional units from Deerfield, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Palatine, Northbrook, and Prospect Heights were dispatched, but they were soon released as the fire remained contained within the original unit.
Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, arrived shortly after the main fire was under control and captured several images of the scene. He has compiled a gallery of photos, which can be viewed here. His photographs show firefighters forcing entry into adjacent units, cutting through an overhead garage door, and accessing the second floor via a ground ladder due to the compromised stairway. One image highlights the point of origin, where the fire reportedly started between the garage and the front entryway.
The response involved coordinated efforts from multiple departments, showcasing the importance of mutual aid in such incidents. Despite the challenges, the fire was successfully controlled without any injuries reported.
