According to officials at the Aurora Regional Fire Museum, despite the ongoing presence of the pandemic, there are indications that things are starting to resemble a sense of normalcy at their location at 53 N. Broadway in Aurora, which reopened back in January following Illinois’ COVID-19 mitigation strategies.
Brian Failing, the museum's executive director, mentioned that they've been operating on their regular schedule, open from Wednesday to Saturday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and have noticed most visitors coming by in the afternoons. He stated, "We're seeing around 30 visitors per week, and we're optimistic that as the weather gets better and we move into spring and summer, our visitor count will increase."
The museum is adhering to the current COVID-19 guidelines, requiring all guests to wear masks and maintain social distancing. Interactive exhibits and any features involving physical contact have been temporarily removed to minimize risks.
Meanwhile, efforts to enhance the visitor experience continue. In just the last couple of months, new displays have been set up, featuring around six photographs centered around fire department themes, along with a new exhibit borrowed from the national Emergency Medical Services. This particular exhibit delves into the evolution of emergency medical services, ranging from battlefield medicine to contemporary civilian practices, and it will remain on display for several months.
Looking forward, additional exhibits are in the works. One upcoming project involves creating a Safety in the Home exhibit scheduled to launch this summer. Additionally, there's a new initiative planned for the fall aimed at commemorating two significant events.
As the museum navigates these challenging times, they remain committed to providing engaging and educational experiences while ensuring the safety of both staff and visitors.
