Many people in the Chicago area are familiar with Steve Redick, a Senior Fire Alarm Operator with the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) and a contributor to this site. Steve’s father, Warren Redick, had a long and distinguished career with the CFD before retiring. Beyond his service, Warren was also an enthusiastic photographer who captured the spirit of the fire department through his lens. Starting in the 1950s, he was ahead of his time by using Kodachrome slides when most photographers still shot in black and white. His eye for composition and precise exposure skills led to a remarkable collection of vivid and dramatic images—showing both the fire apparatus in action and in posed shots.
Steve describes the book as:
*"An historical photo retrospective of the Chicago Fire Department. The book features several hundred brilliantly restored Kodachrome images of the men, apparatus, and fires from the 1950s and 1960s. Alongside these stunning visuals, the book includes historical data such as dates, locations, equipment details, and a wealth of interesting facts and anecdotes. This is a must-see book filled with rare photos from a bygone era in Chicago firefighting."*
