Tungsten is widely used in modern technology in a pure metal state and in an alloy state. The most important alloy state is alloy steel, tungsten carbide-based cemented carbide, wear resistant and strong hot alloy. Tungsten is mainly used in the following industrial fields.

Most tungsten steel industry for the production of special steel. Widely used high speed steels contain 9% to 24% tungsten, 3.8% to 4.6% chromium , 1% to 5% vanadium , 4% to 7% cobalt , and 0.7% to 1.5% carbon. High-speed steel is characterized by high quenching and tempering temperature (700-800 °C) in the air, which can be automatically quenched. Therefore, it maintains high hardness and wear resistance up to 600-650 °C. Alloy tool steel, tungsten steel containing 0.8% to 1.2% tungsten; chromium tungsten silicon contains 2% to 2.7% tungsten; chromium-tungsten steel contains 2% to 9% tungsten; chromium-tungsten-manganese steel contains 0.5% 1.6% tungsten. Tungsten-containing steel is used in the manufacture of various tools such as drills, milling cutters, wire drawing dies, female and male dies, and pneumatic tools. The tungsten magnet steel is a permanent magnet steel containing 5.2% to 6.2% of tungsten, 0.68% to 0.78% of carbon, and 0.3% to 0.5% of chromium. The tungsten-cobalt magnet has a hard magnetic material of 11.5% to 14.5% tungsten, 5.5% to 6.5% molybdenum , and 11.5% to 12.5% ​​cobalt. They have high magnetization and coercive force.

Tungsten carbide based cemented carbide

The tungsten carbide has high hardness, wear resistance and refractory properties. These alloys contain 85% to 95% tungsten carbide and 5% to 14% cobalt, which acts as a binder metal which gives the alloy the necessary strength. Some alloys are mainly used in the machining of steel, further contains a carbide of titanium, tantalum and niobium. All of these alloys are manufactured by powder metallurgy. They still have high hardness and wear resistance when heated to 1000 to 1100 °C. The cutting speed of cemented carbide tools far exceeds the cutting speed of the best tool steel tools. Cemented carbide is mainly used in cutting tools, mining tools and wire drawing dies.
