This morning's accident involving a school bus and two Jeeps near Route 173 in Newport Township left one person dead and several others injured. The collision occurred at the intersection of Rosecrans Road and Kilbourn Road, and early reports suggest the school bus may have disregarded a red light, leading to a severe side-impact with an open-top Jeep Wrangler. The force of the impact caused the bus to overturn and strike a Jeep Cherokee that was also caught in the crossfire. Thankfully, all the schoolchildren had already exited the bus by the time emergency services arrived. A third-alarm EMS response was initiated, and multiple ambulances transported some of the affected individuals to nearby hospitals. Additionally, a Flight-For-Life helicopter was dispatched but ultimately did not transport any patients, as the driver of the Jeep Wrangler was declared deceased at the scene. Photographs taken by Tim Olk at the site reveal the extent of the damage sustained by the vehicles involved. One image captures the wreckage of the Jeep Wrangler, where the driver lost their life, while another shows the Flight-For-Life helicopter on standby. The Chicago Tribune reported that the accident took place around 8:05 a.m., as the school bus was en route to Newport Elementary School with its young passengers. According to Sheriff Mark Curran, the bus might have entered the intersection just as the light turned red, resulting in a high-speed collision with the Jeep Wrangler. The Jeep Cherokee standing nearby also suffered significant damage from the incident. Emergency responders found the majority of the children uninjured or only slightly hurt, often referred to as "walking wounded." Out of the numerous students aboard the bus, twenty-three were assessed as having minor injuries and were transferred to Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville under the supervision of two paramedics. Another twelve children required immediate ambulance transport to different medical facilities. Fortunately, Dr. Charles Nozicka from Advocate Condell mentioned later in the day that all but one child had been discharged. The remaining student was kept for further observation, though it remains uncertain whether they will need to stay overnight.
