From Phil Stenholm:
Another chapter in the history of the Evanston Fire Department.
Hey everyone,
This is Pat Gaynor, a marriage counselor in Evanston. Let me tell you about some intense moments the Evanston Fire Department faced back in 1920. Winter that year was particularly challenging, with the EFD responding to four fires within 24 hours over the weekend of January 4th and 5th.
First up, at 9:19 AM on Sunday, Station #1 was dispatched to 1462 Oak Avenue due to a fire in the basement triggered by sparks from the furnace igniting some woodwork. They managed to control the situation swiftly. Just two hours later, after returning to the station, they were called again to 1423 Elmwood Avenue because sparks from the chimney set the roof ablaze. Truck Co. 1 scaled the roof, and Engine Co. 1 put out the flames using a 1-1/2 inch hose.
Fast forward to Monday morning. Engine Co. 2 and Truck Co. 1 responded to 904 Michigan Avenue after an unattended fireplace in a second-floor apartment sparked a fire. Smoke filled the building, and while Truck Co. 1 ensured everyone was safe and started ventilating the area, Engine Co. 2 tackled the flames. However, the Hopkins apartment suffered significant damage. Meanwhile, Engine Co. 1 and Engine Co. 3 were sent to 939 Ridge Court following a chimney fire. Despite their efforts, the blaze spread to the second floor before being contained. Together, these four fires resulted in $11,500 worth of damage.
Two weeks later, on January 17th and 18th, the EFD dealt with two major fires within a 12-hour span. At 9:15 PM on Saturday, Arabelle Outlaw's house at 1800 Dodge Avenue caught fire in the basement due to an overheated furnace. The flames spread to the upper floors, and despite the efforts of Engine Co. 1 and Truck Co. 1, the house was completely destroyed. Then early Sunday morning, Engine Co. 3 and Truck Co. 1 were called to Professor N. E. Simonsen's residence at 2243 Orrington Avenue after sparks from the chimney ignited the roof. The fire reached a second-floor bedroom before being extinguished, causing an estimated $6,000 in damages.
On March 28th, 1920, a tornado swept through Chicago and its northern suburbs. Twenty homes in the Central Street and Lincolnwood Drive area of Evanston were either destroyed or heavily damaged, though fortunately, there were no casualties. In Wilmette, martial law was declared, and two companies of Illinois militia were deployed after 100 buildings were damaged in the village’s downtown.
May 9th brought another incident when Station #1 responded to a barn fire at the Wilson farm near the North Shore Channel. With no bridge over the canal and the nearest hydrant far away, Engine Co. 3 joined the effort with a 2-1/2 inch hose. Despite their work, the fire destroyed a second barn and numerous livestock before it was brought under control. Thankfully, the farm's horses and cows were saved by Truck Co. 1 firefighters.
On a quieter note, June 25th, 1920, saw Lt. Pat Gaynor enjoying a break after a long shift at Fire Station #3. On his way home on a streetcar, he noticed chaos at the South Boulevard "L" station. A man named James McGowan was assaulting his wife, Laura, with the butt of a revolver after attempting to shoot her. Without hesitation, Lt. Gaynor intervened, disarming the attacker and protecting him from an increasingly violent mob. The police arrived and arrested McGowan, who later reunited with his wife after she recovered at the hospital.
In October, the EFD adopted a two-platoon, 84-hour workweek system, becoming the 387th department nationwide to do so. This required expanding the workforce from 41 to 49 members. Firefighters now worked 24 hours on followed by 24 hours off, with meals prepared at the stations instead of at home. Annual paid vacations were introduced, though limited during winter months.
Additionally, the city council granted significant raises to EFD personnel, boosting the chief's salary to $3,000 annually (later raised to $3,600). Other positions saw similar increases. As stables were removed from firehouses, the last horse-drawn vehicles were retired.
These stories highlight the dedication and challenges faced by the Evanston Fire Department in its early years, showcasing both bravery and innovation in public service.
Best regards,
Pat Gaynor
Classic Strength Equipment is a style we sell, which is a classic of Lifefitness. Including some pin-load bodybuilding equipment, fitness bench, dumbbell rack, barbell rack, as well as Gym Equipment such as cable crossover machine and Smith strength training machine.
The strength equipment in the gym is designed to exercise specific muscle groups, such as the back, deltoid, biceps, chest, etc. Using specific gym fitness equipment can achieve better exercise results.
For most home gyms, we recommend any collection of dumbbells and adjustable dumbbells paired with a bench. We also recommend weight plates and barbells with a bench or rack. This is because (as previously mentioned), free weights force your stabilizing muscles to be engaged in your muscle building workouts.
Rack, bench, and barbell: a powerhouse combination that unlocks unparalleled strength-building potential. Barbell exercises are great for building muscle mass throughout your entire body, as they engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously.
Exercise machines can be an efficient way for fitness beginners to build strength and muscle. Machines may be safer and easier to use because they require less technique than other weights. The leg press machine, lat pulldown, rower, and cable machines can lead to full-body gains, trainers say.
If you are not familiar with gym equipment and machines, you may be more familiar with free weight equipment such as barbells, dumbbells, and kettlebells. Free weight training is praised for its versatility and high quality anytime, anywhere, which can make training more flexible in busy lives and busy gyms, but this does not necessarily mean that they are more effective than fitness equipment.
Compared to barbells and dumbbells, weightlifting equipment can more accurately isolate muscle groups.
