Saturday afternoon in Chicago was a cold and challenging day for firefighters responding to a structure fire. Eric Haak shared his account of the incident, which unfolded rapidly and under difficult conditions. The call came in at just before 2 PM for a fire reported on the 5700 block of South Indiana Avenue. By the time the 17th Battalion Chief arrived on scene, reports had already come in about people trapped on the second floor. This elevated the response to a Still and Box alarm, signaling an urgent need for resources.
Engine 84, stationed just five blocks away, was on the scene in less than two minutes. They found themselves dealing with a fire on the second floor of a three-story, ordinary brick apartment building measuring 30 by 70 feet. Fortunately, the fire was confined to one of the six units in the building, limiting the visible damage from further away.
Arriving shortly after, Eric observed Truck 51 raising its ladder to the roof as the firefighting efforts intensified. Within minutes, the flames were brought under control. Despite the urgency, all search efforts turned up empty-handed—no one was found inside. However, seven adults and six children were displaced by the fire, though thankfully, a family cat managed to survive, despite initial appearances suggesting otherwise. As Eric left the scene, he saw the soaked and soot-covered feline reunited with its relieved owner.
The firefighting teams involved included Engine 84, Engine 47, Truck 51, and Truck 30. Backup support came from Box engines 50 and 16. Eric captured several photos, including one of Engine 50, the oldest active engine in the fleet, which continues to play a vital role in the department's operations.
Attached to his message were several images showcasing the intense firefighting action. One photograph shows firefighters battling the blaze in the frigid conditions, capturing the dedication and perseverance required during such emergencies. Another image highlights Engine 50, standing tall amidst the chaos, a testament to its long-standing service. Additional shots depict the aftermath and the impressive teamwork between different units.
The resilience of both the firefighters and the community shone through in this event, where swift action and coordination made all the difference. Despite the displacement of residents, the successful rescue of the cat added a small ray of hope to an otherwise challenging situation.
