From the Addison Fire District: Hey everyone, I just wanted to share some important updates about how our local fire department is stepping up their game when it comes to handling emergencies involving active shooters. It's a tough reality, but they’re taking steps to ensure the safety of both responders and victims. You might not realize this, but things have changed quite a bit compared to the past. Before, paramedics and firefighters would wait for the police to secure the area before going in to help. Now, teams made up of both police officers and first responders are entering dangerous situations right away to provide immediate care and get people out safely. The Addison Fire Protection District is making sure their on-duty paramedics and firefighters are equipped with top-notch gear—like bulletproof vests and ballistic helmets—to keep them safe while they do their jobs. They recently approved spending $16,283 on this essential equipment, which will stay on their vehicles so it’s always ready whenever needed. As Fire Chief Joe Leone put it, “We can’t afford to sit back anymore; we need to act alongside law enforcement and give medical attention as quickly as possible.” They’ve also been working hard on specialized training programs to prepare for these kinds of scenarios. Chief Leone mentioned that they’re now fully prepared to face what unfortunately has become part of modern life. Here’s hoping we never have to see these measures put into action too often—but knowing they’re there makes me feel a lot safer. Just last week, I saw one of their trucks parked downtown, and seeing those tactical vests clearly visible reminded me just how seriously they take protecting us all. Stay safe out there!
