Around 1 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2nd, Winnetka's police officers and firefighters were called out to a reported house fire at 614 Pine Lane. Battalion 28 was the first to arrive at this small, dead-end street, where they noticed flames coming from the C-sector of the building. The emergency response level was quickly escalated to a working fire status to bring in more resources. However, the narrow, single-lane street presented challenges for the fire trucks, limiting their maneuverability.
Glencoe Engine 30 managed to stretch 400 feet of 5-inch hose from a hydrant on the cross street to supply Winnetka Engine 28, which required an additional 400 feet of hose. Multiple lines were deployed inside the house as firefighting teams tackled the intense fire raging in the attic. External lines were also set up around the building to support the efforts.
About 20 minutes into the incident, the alarm was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm. Firefighters observed the blaze venting through the roof in several places. While interior lines continued to fight the flames, a cellar nozzle was used to direct water from the roof into two separate openings. Thanks to these coordinated efforts, the fire was brought under control without spreading significantly beyond the attic area. Later, two additional engines were requested primarily to provide extra manpower.
The firefighting operation involved engines from multiple neighboring towns including Winnetka, Glencoe, Wilmette, Northfield, Evanston, Highland Park, Lincolnwood, Deerfield, and Wheeling. Trucks were sent from Winnetka, Glenview, and Skokie. Support units like Morton Grove Squad 4, Northbrook Ambulance 11, and Wilmette Ambulance 27 were also present. A firefighter was evaluated by Ambulance 11's team, and chief officers from Winnetka, Wilmette, Northbrook, and Northfield were on-site.
Notably, the property houses the Indonesian Consulate General’s residence.
Attached are several photos taken by Larry Shapiro, capturing moments such as smoke pouring from a vent hole cut in the roof, firefighters pulling hoses, and others showing the intense firefighting effort both on the ground and on the roof. These images vividly illustrate the scale and intensity of the operation.
