The emergency response began just before 1 PM on Wednesday, September 2nd, when reports came in about a house fire at 614 Pine Lane in Winnetka. Winnetka police and firefighters were quickly dispatched to the scene. Battalion 28 was the first to arrive, reporting visible flames emanating from the C-sector of the structure. The initial alarm was escalated to a working fire status to summon additional resources due to the challenging situation. Access to the small, dead-end street was limited by its narrow, single-lane design, which complicated the deployment of firefighting equipment. Glencoe Engine 30 stretched 400 feet of 5-inch hose to a hydrant on the cross street and then supplied Winnetka Engine 28 with another 400 feet of hose. Multiple lines were deployed inside the house as teams tackled the intense fire raging in the attic. Exterior lines were also positioned around the building to support the effort. Around the 20-minute mark, the alarm was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm. Firefighters observed the blaze venting through the roof in at least three locations. While interior lines were active, a cellar nozzle was used from the roof to target specific openings where flames were concentrated. Despite the challenges posed by the confined space, the fire was brought under control without significant extension beyond the attic areas. Additional engines were later requested to bolster manpower as the operation continued. Engines from multiple jurisdictions including Winnetka, Glencoe, Wilmette, Northfield, Evanston, Highland Park, Lincolnwood, Deerfield, and Wheeling were involved in the response. Trucks were dispatched from Winnetka, Glenview, and Skokie. Supporting units included Morton Grove Squad 4, Northbrook Ambulance 11, and Wilmette Ambulance 27. One firefighter received an evaluation from Ambulance 11’s team. Chief officers from several departments, including Winnetka, Wilmette, Northbrook, and Northfield, were present at the scene. Notably, the residence housed the Indonesian Consulate General. Images captured by Larry Shapiro during the incident provide a vivid glimpse into the intensity of the firefighting efforts. Smoke billowing from a vent hole cut into the roof underscores the urgency of the situation, while photos of firefighters pulling hoses and using specialized nozzles highlight their determination and skill. A chief fire officer can be seen assessing the scene, guiding operations amidst the chaos. The collaborative efforts of various agencies ensured that the fire was managed effectively, minimizing potential damage and maintaining public safety. The rapid response and strategic deployment of resources played a crucial role in containing the fire and protecting the surrounding area.
