During the Accelerate 2016 conference in Boston, Autodesk made a major announcement: the introduction of cloud-based Product Data Management (PDM) within Fusion Lifecycle. This move marks a significant milestone as Fusion Lifecycle becomes the first ever full-featured, end-to-end cloud-based PLM solution available on the market.

Whether you're a large global manufacturer or a small startup, the need for a unified platform that supports every stage of product development is clear. No one wants to juggle multiple tools, migrate data between systems, or deal with fragmented workflows. That's where Fusion comes in.

Fusion Lifecycle offers a complete product innovation platform, from concept to customer. At its core is Fusion 360, which brings CAD, CAM, and CAE together in the cloud. Earlier in 2016, Autodesk expanded the Fusion ecosystem with Fusion Lifecycle for PLM and Fusion Connect for IoT data management. Now, with the addition of Cloud PDM, the platform is even more powerful and comprehensive.

The new Cloud PDM functionality is built directly into Fusion Lifecycle and is immediately available to all users. It allows engineers to collaborate on designs, manage work-in-process CAD data, and track versions and releases—all in one place. Teams can also connect to manufacturing workflows, making it easier to share design data across the enterprise.

Managing design data has never been simpler. With Fusion Lifecycle, it’s as intuitive as saving files to folders—except with automatic revision control and versioning. The new PDM features enhance collaboration between engineering and other departments, enabling real-time design reviews, 3D file markup, and streamlined BOM and ECO management. All of this is included at no extra cost for existing subscribers.

"We've been using Fusion Lifecycle for over a year, and it has already improved our product development process significantly," said Brian Hunter, Quality Control Manager at NovaCentrix. "But this new PDM feature is exactly what we were waiting for. Having a full PLM solution in the cloud will make everything much more efficient."

In addition to Cloud PDM, Autodesk announced several upcoming enhancements to the Fusion portfolio aimed at helping manufacturers stay competitive:

  • Fusion Connect – Soon to offer Dynamic Predictive Analytics powered by Nutonian. This AI-driven tool helps manufacturers extract insights from massive IoT data sets, enabling accurate predictions of equipment failure and driving smarter business decisions.

"As we continue to expand our cloud offerings, enhancing our IoT analytics was a natural next step," said Bryan Kester, director of IoT at Autodesk. "Nutonian’s technology gives us a unique edge in delivering powerful, AI-powered solutions for our customers."

  • Fusion Configure – Coming soon, this feature will bring enterprise-grade CPQ (Configure, Price, Quote) capabilities to manufacturers who build customizable products. It enables faster, more accurate quoting and order processing, helping companies meet rising demand for personalized products.

One of the biggest advantages of the Fusion platform is its cloud-based nature. There’s no hardware to install, no expensive upgrades to implement, and no downtime. Engineers can access their data from anywhere, ensuring continuous progress even when they’re away from the office.

"Traditionally, product development has been slow, costly, and disconnected," said Lisa Campbell, vice president of manufacturing industry strategy at Autodesk. "We’re changing that. Today’s updates to the Fusion platform are a big step forward in redefining how products are designed, made, and used."
