An article on ourgazette.com covered the follow-up to the sudden closure of American LaFrance Fire Apparatus in South Carolina:

A former employee who once locked the gates of American LaFrance earlier this year found himself inside the Patillo building again on Wednesday—but this time, not as an employee, but as one of hundreds of people attending the county’s auction of the company's business assets after its dissolution.

American LaFrance shut down in January, leaving hundreds without jobs and a $650,000 debt to taxpayers from an economic development deal. Now, the county is trying to recover that loss through the public sale of the company's remaining equipment.

On Wednesday, the auction took place at the company's former location on Cypress Gardens Road. The event was more than just a liquidation—it was a rare and unusual move for a county to have to sell off a company's assets after it simply vanished from the market.

According to County Supervisor Dan Davis, this might be the first time a county has had to go through such a process with a company that effectively disappeared. "It's not something we ever expected to handle," he said.

By 9 a.m., over 90 people had registered online, and more than 70 had signed up for in-person bidding the day before. The turnout showed just how much interest there was in acquiring used industrial equipment at a discount.

Steve Potts, president of Scout Boats, made the trip from his Summerville plant just to see what was available. His top pick? A set of bridge cranes, which could be useful for his own operations.

Robert Holseberg, owner of Rewined Candles in Charleston, was also on hand, hoping to get some extra tools for his growing business. He was particularly interested in forklifts, tables, and cabinets—items that could help him expand production.

Interestingly, the company's inventory—including partially completed fire trucks—was not part of the auction. The county explained that the owners of the Patillo building have a legal claim to those items due to American LaFrance defaulting on its lease. A representative from the building said they're still trying to contact someone from the company to resolve the issue.

Thanks, Dan
