American LaFrance … sad news (follow up)

A former employee who once locked the gate to American LaFrance earlier this year found himself back inside the Patillo building on Wednesday—but not as an employee. Instead, he was among hundreds of people gathered for the county’s public auction of the dissolved company’s business personal property.

The company shut its doors in January, leaving hundreds without jobs and a $650,000 debt to taxpayers from an economic development deal that never fully materialized.

On Wednesday, the county took action by holding a public auction at the company’s former location on Cypress Gardens Road, aiming to recover some of the lost funds.

County Supervisor Dan Davis noted that this is likely the first time a county has had to sell off a company’s business assets after the firm essentially vanished from the scene.

By 9 a.m., over 90 people had pre-registered online, and more than 70 had signed up for in-person bidding the day before, showing strong interest in the sale.

Steve Potts, president of Scout Boats, traveled from his Summerville plant to bid on equipment. His top priority? Bridge cranes.

Robert Holseberg of Rewined Candles in Charleston was also there, looking for extra tools to support his expanding business. He was especially interested in forklifts, tables, and cabinets.

Notably, the company’s inventory—including firetrucks in various stages of completion—was not part of the auction. The county explained that the Patillo building owners have a claim due to American LaFrance defaulting on its lease. A representative from the building said they are still trying to contact someone from the company to resolve the issue.
