The Herbie Johnson Golf Classic

Chicago Fire Capt. Herbert T. Johnson was known for his larger-than-life personality, and it’s only fitting that the annual Herbie Johnson Golf Classic honors him with a celebration as big as he was. This year’s event is set to be one of the largest golf outings ever held in the area, featuring 10 courses across Chicago and expecting over 1,000 participants. Last year, the event drew 380 players across three courses, but this year’s scale is significantly bigger.

"It's supposed to be one of the biggest golf outings ever," said Ted Johnson, Herbie’s brother. "This is the third year, and it's never been this big before."

The event kicks off with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on June 29. After the rounds are complete, attendees will gather for a picnic-style reception from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 115 Bourbon Street, located at 3359 W. 115th St. in south suburban Merrionette Park. The gathering will feature grilled steaks and a chance for friends and family to come together in memory of Captain Johnson.

Herbie Johnson passed away while battling an extra-alarm house fire on November 2, 2012, in Gage Park. In the wake of his death, a golf outing was created to honor his legacy. Since its start, the event has raised more than $30,000, with funds going toward helping struggling firefighters in Chicago and supporting a scholarship at St. Rita High School in Ashburn.

This year, the organizers have partnered with the FDNY 9-11 Memorial Golf Outing in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Herbie played a key role in planning that event and built strong relationships along the way. The collaboration brings a new level of recognition and support to the cause.

So far, over 100 golfers have registered for the event. Participation costs $125, which includes both the golf and the after-party. Some of the more exclusive courses may require an additional fee. For those who just want to join the festivities at 115 Bourbon Street, a $50 ticket is available.
