The Herbie Johnson Golf Classic

Chicago Fire Capt. Herbert T. Johnson was known for his larger-than-life personality, so it’s only fitting that the Herbie Johnson Golf Classic, a tribute to the fallen firefighter, is just as big and bold. This year's event will take place across 10 courses in the Chicago area, with an estimated 1,000 golfers expected to participate—making it the largest gathering yet. Last year, the event had 380 players and spanned three courses.

"It's supposed to be one of the biggest golf outings ever," said Ted Johnson, Herbie’s brother. "This is the third year, and it's never been this big before."

The event kicks off with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on June 29. After the rounds are complete, guests will enjoy a picnic-style reception featuring grilled steaks from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 115 Bourbon Street, located at 3359 W. 115th St. in south suburban Merrionette Park.

Herbie Johnson passed away while battling an extra-alarm house fire on November 2, 2012, in Gage Park. In his memory, a golf outing was created shortly after his death. Since its launch, the event has raised over $30,000, with proceeds supporting struggling firefighters in Chicago. A portion of the funds also goes toward a scholarship at St. Rita High School in Ashburn.

This year, the organizers have joined forces with the FDNY 9-11 Memorial Golf Outing in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Herbie played a key role in planning that event and formed lasting friendships along the way.

So far, more than 100 golfers have signed up for the event. The cost to play is $125, which includes the tournament and the after-party. Some of the premium courses may charge an additional fee. For those who just want to attend the reception, tickets are available for $50.

It's not just about golf—it's about honoring a hero, bringing people together, and keeping Herbie's spirit alive through community and camaraderie.
