The Glenview Fire Department responded to an emergency call regarding smoke inside a building located at 3521 Central Road in unincorporated Cook County late last night, just before 10 PM. Follow-up reports indicated a fire breaking out on the third floor of a three-story apartment complex, with concerns raised about a possible jumper on one of the balconies. Glenview Engine 7 was the first unit to arrive on the scene, where they discovered intense flames erupting from a third-floor apartment. A panicked tenant was seen on the balcony, prompting the firefighters to immediately upgrade the alarm to a box alarm.
As the team prepared for a potential rescue operation, they urgently called out to the resident, urging them not to jump. Thankfully, the occupant managed to escape by climbing over to an adjacent balcony and descending one floor as firefighters successfully positioned a ground ladder below. The fire was swiftly brought under control, though there was some minor spread into the neighboring unit. Glenview's firefighting efforts involved three engines actively pumping water onto the blaze, while Truck 14 focused on operations from the roof. Mutual aid support came from Northfield Squad 29, North Maine Engine 1 and Battalion 1, Niles Engine, Ambulance, and Battalion 2, Morton Grove Engine 5 and Squad 4, Northbrook Truck 12, Wilmette Tower 26, and Mt. Prospect Engine 14.
Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro arrived at the scene after the fire had already been extinguished. Some images from the incident have since been shared online. One striking photograph captures Glenview Engine 6 positioned near the west side of the building, with Larry Shapiro’s lens offering a detailed view of the scene. Other images highlight the extensive overhaul work conducted by firefighters on the balcony and the mansard roof, ensuring no hidden embers remained. Additional shots depict mutual aid units working collaboratively from the roof, diligently wetting down void spaces above the adjoining unit to prevent any reignition. Another image shows Glenview Engine 13 supplying water to Engine 7 closer to the affected unit, underscoring the coordinated efforts of all involved.
This incident serves as a testament to the professionalism and teamwork displayed by the Glenview Fire Department and its partners. It also highlights the importance of swift response and decisive action in managing emergencies like this one. While the situation could have been much worse, the quick thinking and skillful execution of the firefighters ensured the safety of everyone involved.
