Edmunds.com recently released its 2013 list of the Best Retained Values, and Toyota once again proved why it's a leader in vehicle value retention. Four of Toyota’s models were honored as top performers in their respective categories, showcasing the brand’s consistent excellence in maintaining high resale value.
Every year, Edmunds evaluates vehicles based on their retained value, which is calculated as the projected private party resale value after five years, assuming 15,000 miles driven annually. This figure is then expressed as a percentage of the vehicle’s original MSRP. The evaluation process divides models into categories based on body type and average MSRP, ensuring a fair comparison across different segments.
Toyota dominated multiple categories this year. The Toyota Tacoma took first place in the compact truck category with an impressive 60.2% retained value, making it the highest in its class. The Toyota Prius led the hybrid segment with a 47.4% retained value, while the Toyota 4Runner claimed victory in the $35,000–$45,000 SUV category with a 51.1% rate. Lastly, the Toyota Venza topped the under-$35,000 wagon category with a 48.9% retained value.
These results highlight Toyota’s ability to create vehicles that not only perform well but also hold their value over time—something that makes them a smart choice for many buyers. Whether you're looking for reliability, fuel efficiency, or long-term value, Toyota continues to deliver.
Have you ever considered how well your car holds its value? If you own a Toyota, you might be surprised by how well it stacks up against the competition. What are your thoughts on retained value when choosing a vehicle?
