This message is from Eric Haak: --- The firefighters managed to get this situation under control pretty quickly, especially given how cold it was outside. I didn’t stick around for too long because of the freezing temperatures. Around 2 PM on Saturday, the 17th Battalion Chief in Chicago was sent to check out a fire at the 5700 block of South Indiana Avenue. While they were on their way, the fire alarm office got calls saying there were people trapped on the second floor. This prompted them to upgrade the response to a Still and Box alert. The closest engine company, Engine 84, was just five blocks away and arrived on scene in under two minutes. They reported flames coming from the second floor of a three-story, ordinary brick apartment building that measured 30x70 feet. If you weren't within a couple of miles, there wasn't much to see since the fire was confined to just one unit in the six-unit building. I arrived just as Truck 51 was raising its ladder to the roof. Within a few minutes, the fire was extinguished. Thankfully, all the search efforts came up empty, meaning no one was inside when the fire broke out. However, seven adults and six children were displaced by the blaze. Surprisingly, a family cat survived despite being soaked in soot and water. As I was leaving, the pet was handed back to its relieved owner. At first, it looked like the cat might not make it, but then it started moving and appeared to be okay. The responding companies included Engine 84, Engine 47, Truck 51, and Truck 30. I think the backup engines were 50 and 16. I’ve included a picture of Engine 50, which happens to be the oldest active engine in the fleet. --- [Attached Photos] *Photo 1: Chicago firemen battling an apartment fire in freezing temperatures. *Photo 2: Another angle showing the intense firefighting effort. *Photo 3: Close-up of firefighters working to contain the blaze. *Photo 4: A firefighter checking the status of the fire from below. *Photo 5: Engine 50, the oldest active engine in the Chicago Fire Department, parked at the scene. --- Eric Haak photo --- I hope this version captures the urgency and detail of the situation while sounding more natural and personal.
