Sunday's fire alarm on Maple Avenue was quite an operation, as I learned from Eric Haak. He sent over a detailed summary of the rigs that were actively involved when he arrived. Unfortunately, by the time he got there, most of the action had already taken place. Still, he managed to piece together what happened based on the setup he saw.
The main firefighting efforts were concentrated right in front of the burning building on Maple. Lyons Engine 1312 was parked directly in the line of action, while McCook Engine 1411 was stationed just to the north of them. To the south of Lyons Engine 1312, Riverside Truck 1629 was hard at work. Just south of Riverside, Bedford Park Truck 709 had its equipment set up and ready to assist.
Further away from the immediate scene, Lyons Engine 1316 had secured a hydrant at the intersection of Maple and 41st Place. From there, a long lead stretched all the way to the Cermak Quarry, where Berwyn Engine 903 was busy drafting water from the pond. Interestingly, Forest View Engine 813 had initially been positioned in that spot but wasn’t actually pumping water. Moving further down the block, Lyons Engine 1311 had established another hydrant at the corner of Joliet Road and Elm Avenue, which was more than two blocks south of the fire building.
I also received several photos from Eric Haak that capture the intense activity at the scene. The images show various fire trucks, including Pierce aerial ladders and Spartan engines, all working together to combat the blaze. In one shot, you can see a firefighter supervising the drafting of water from the pond, highlighting the resourcefulness needed during such operations. Another image displays a Seagrave aerial ladder truck at the scene, emphasizing the coordination required among different units.
As someone who enjoys capturing these moments, Eric’s photos really bring the scale and complexity of firefighting to life. It’s always fascinating to see how these teams come together under pressure to protect our communities.
