Subject: Thoughts on Supporting Our Community During Challenging Times Dear CFD Engine 94 Team, First and foremost, I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude for everything you do—not just now, but always. Your dedication to keeping our community safe has never been more evident than during the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic and recent events surrounding the tragic death of George Floyd. As someone who works closely with individuals dealing with grief and trauma, I’ve been reflecting deeply on what’s unfolding across the country, especially here in Chicago. The protests and unrest following Mr. Floyd’s killing are not merely acts of chaos—they’re expressions of collective pain, frustration, and a long-standing cry for justice against systemic injustices rooted in racial oppression. These emotions run deep, and they deserve acknowledgment. I understand that managing such volatile situations requires skill, patience, and empathy. As public servants, your role isn’t just about maintaining order—it’s also about fostering understanding and trust between law enforcement and the communities you serve. With that in mind, I wanted to share a suggestion that might help create a bridge between those who protest and those who aim to support them safely: What if you could visibly align yourselves with the messages central to these demonstrations? Imagine wearing or displaying signs with phrases like **“I Can’t Breathe”** or **“Black Lives Matter,”** alongside symbols of peace and solidarity. This small yet powerful gesture could signal to protesters that you genuinely hear their cries, see their struggles, and stand with them in spirit while ensuring everyone remains safe. It might reduce feelings of alienation and instead foster collaboration—showing that you’re there to guide, protect, and reassure, rather than simply control or suppress. Of course, I recognize that implementing changes like this requires careful consideration and planning. But even small steps toward showing empathy can make a significant difference in how people perceive authority figures during tense moments. Once again, thank you for listening to my perspective and for everything you do to keep our city strong. Please take care of yourselves as well—you’re carrying immense responsibility right now. With sincere appreciation, Kristen Friedman P.S. If there’s ever an opportunity to engage further on this topic—or anything else—you know where to find me.
