5 Tips for Grilling Lobster Tail This Holiday Season

5 minute read | Holiday

This holiday season is the perfect time to impress your guests with a special and delicious meal. One of the most popular choices is grilled lobster tail — it's flavorful, easy to prepare, and always a hit. While you can boil or bake it, grilling gives it that smoky flavor and crispy texture that makes it truly unforgettable. Here are five tips to help you grill the perfect lobster tail this season.

Keep It Simple

Grilled lobster tail doesn’t need a complicated recipe to be amazing. The key is to enhance its natural taste with simple ingredients. Before grilling, brush the tails with olive oil and season them lightly with salt. Once they’re cooked, serve them with a rich butter sauce. A great option is a garlic, tarragon, and hot sauce-infused butter. It adds just the right amount of flavor without overpowering the lobster.

Control the Heat

One common mistake when grilling lobster tail is using too high a heat. Set your gas grill to medium and let it preheat for about ten minutes. This ensures even cooking and prevents the meat from becoming tough. Keep an eye on the lobster as it cooks — the shell will turn bright pink when it’s done, signaling it’s ready to flip.

Butterfly the Tails

To ensure even cooking, butterfly the lobster tails by cutting down the soft underside of the shell. This allows the heat to reach all parts of the tail and helps it cook faster and more evenly. Make sure the cut is clean and straight so the tail stays intact while grilling.

Grill with Care

Once the tails are prepared, place them on the grill with the cut side down. They should only take about 8–10 minutes total. You’ll know they’re almost done when the shell starts turning pink. Flip them over and cook for a few more minutes until the meat is fully cooked and slightly firm to the touch. Avoid overcooking, as it can make the lobster rubbery.

Serve Fresh and Flavorful

As soon as the lobster tails are done, serve them immediately. Pair them with a fresh salad, lemon wedges, and a glass of chilled chardonnay for a complete holiday meal. Don’t forget to offer the herb-butter mixture on the side so everyone can enjoy it their way. Grilled lobster tail is not just a meal — it’s a celebration of flavor and tradition.
